ASMSA hosts artists to boost arts education curriculum

The Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences, and the Arts will host artists Aaron Collier and Paul Callahan as they visit, teach and speak to students.

Collier, a professor of painting and drawing at Tulane University in New Orleans, visited the campus on Thursday and will remain on campus through today. Collier is a multimedia artist who works with paint, drawing and collage media. His work will be featured in the ASMSA art gallery through today and he will teach students during art classes. An artist talk and reception for Collier was held on Thursday in the ASMSA art studio.

Callahan is a multimedia designer working in both traditional hand methods and digital fabrication techniques. He will visit the campus on Tuesday and Wednesday and his artwork will be on exhibit in the ASMSA art gallery both days.

On Tuesday, Callahan will give woodworking demonstrations in the ASMSA wood shop at a time to be determined and he will give an artist talk at 3:30 p.m. He will teach ASMSA art classes both days.

The artists' visits are funded through a grant from the Windgate Charitable Foundation. ASMSA received a $50,000 grant to increase its arts education curriculum in 2015, and one of the methods to do so is to expose ASMSA students to artists through visits to campus, a news release said.

The artists' talks are open to the public. To attend the talks, visitors must check in at the Administration Building lobby at 200 Whittington Ave.
