Kudos to city for cleanup

Dear editor:

I wanted to share a situation that happened recently. I live in District 2 here in Hot Springs.

On my way home, I noticed someone had illegally dumped several large bags of various household garbage on Portland Street, including leftover food from an apparent get-together. By the time I noticed it, animals had gotten into it and scattered it all over the place.

I can't really understand why people dump illegally, especially with all the opportunities the city of Hot Springs makes available to the residents -- two free CAPS pickups per year, the Spring Flings that occur when people bring unwanted items and fill dumpster after dumpster full and, not to mention, curbside pickup for leaves in the fall. And, with all that and more available, some people still choose to break the law and dump their trash on people. I guess it's just ignorance.

While the Public Works division was bush-hogging along Portland Street, operator Rob Kellar noticed the trash and reported it to Sanitation Litter Crew leader Michael Bell. He and community service workers picked it all up and put it in bags to be picked up. These men showed initiative and a genuine concern. And I am very grateful for their efforts.
