Rams take on Sheridan, LH faces Cabot in benefits

Lakeside had its first taste of life without graduated running backs Colt Housley and Maurice Bradford in Monday's benefit game against Sheridan at Austin Field.

The Rams rushed for 77 yards on 20 carries as a team, Dupree Swanson leading the way with 34 yards on five carries.

Lakeside coach Jared McBride expects the rushing attack to improve but was pleased with his team's effort.

"I think we'll get better as the season goes along," McBride said. "We got a lot out of last night, but we think we can be even better moving forward."

Lakeside completed 7 of 14 passes for 111 yards, Taylor Gillham finishing four of nine with an 11-yard touchdown to Caleb Dean. Zyqwon Russell and Jack Henry Hill paced the Rams with five tackles each.

Lakeside's focus now shifts to Monday's opener against Pulaski Robinson at Little Rock's War Memorial Stadium.

"It was good to face somebody different after practicing against ourselves for so long, but now its time to get down to business," McBride said. "We have a game in less than a week, so we're just trying to get ready for that now."

Lake Hamilton-Cabot

PEARCY -- Coach Jeremy Reed praised the performance of both Lake Hamilton quarterbacks in Monday's benefit game against Cabot, but reiterated that he will not name a starter before the season opener.

Juniors Juan Jackson and Dafavioun Haywood have competed since the beginning of spring practice and each showed glimpes of their potential. Jackson had a 60-yard touchdown run with Haywood also receiving praise for his command of the huddle.

"They both did really well and we still feel confident with either of those guys under center for us," Reed said. "Both of them have things to work on and there's really not a leader in the clubhouse between the two right now."

On defense, the Wolves held Cabot's starting offense to just one touchdown in the third quarter that Reed described as the most similar to an actual game setting.

"Defensively I thought our kids responded well to what Cabot did," said Reed. "They have the type of offense that can wear you down over the course of a game so I thought things went really well for our defense."

Lake Hamilton opens the season against Hot Springs on Sept. 2 at Reese Memorial Stadium.
