Not a laughing matter

Dear editor:

This note is for information only to correct a charge made by one of the letter writers on Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2016, and to clarify the alleged physical conditions of liberals' brains.

How do you think someone who has a brain that has been damaged would feel if she or he read that letter? Insulted? Hurt? Brain damage is not a condition that is funny, nor should the term be used to throw an intended insult to a healthy person -- liberal or conservative. Let's show compassion for persons who have struggled with physical damage to their brains or a disease of the brain. It's not a laughing matter.

By the way, according to my experiences with liberals, they don't become brain damaged when they realize that liberal views are common sense -- nor conservatives, for that matter. I hope this sets the record straight: liberals are not brain damaged.

Yes, we citizens of the United States do have freedom of speech. Yes, we do have freedom of the press. With those freedoms that we often take for granted comes responsibility -- responsibility for what we say and do.

As my mother said countless times, "Just be nice." She has been right. Being nice (and thoughtful) gains respect and friends.

Just be nice.
