September events scheduled at Garvan Woodland Gardens

Garvan Woodland Gardens, 550 Arkridge Road, recently announced its schedule of events for September. All of the following events are at the botanical garden unless otherwise noted:

Art exhibits

• Traditional Artists Guild Exhibit -- September.

Garvan Gardens will host an exhibit by the Traditional Art Guild in September . The beautiful display, all by local artists, will also serve as TAG's annual People's Choice Exhibit. This is a competition for TAG members in which the winners are selected by the public. Visitors will be asked to select a ballot and vote for their favorite piece.

Art exhibits will be located in the Magnolia Room, and are free and open to the public from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.

Special events

• "Pearl's Girls" anniversary performance -- 3 p.m. Sept. 11, Anthony Chapel.

The girls return for an encore performance of the award-winning one-act play "Pearl's Girls," written by Isobel McQuiston.

"My mother was Pearl, and my sisters and I often referred to ourselves as Pearl's girls," McQuiston said in a news release, referring to the title. "I was the youngest, my three sisters were all several years older. They have all passed."

"Pearl's Girls" gather in their family home to discuss and decide the distribution of the home and its contents, the release said.

The cast includes Betty Johann, Doreen Wilson, Sharon Turrentine, Jodi Tooke and Lynn Pelligrino. The play is free and open to the public.

• Annual "Trash Bash" -- 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. on area lakes, and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Klipsch Amphitheater, on Sept. 24.

The annual cleanup event is held on area lakes, with free lunch and admission to Garvan Woodland Gardens on the day of the event only.

Gardening classes

• 2016 Docent Training Classes -- 9-11 a.m., Magnolia Room and Gardens.

The docent classes include Early Fall Interest on Sept. 20 and Fall/Winter Interest on Nov. 1. Docent classes are provided free of cost to volunteers who would like to serve as docents on guided group tours. Reservations are necessary. Call 262-9300 for more information.

• Herbs for Fall -- 1-3:30 p.m. Sept. 22, Magnolia Room.

Presented by Cynthia Faulk of C The Difference, the class focuses on folk remedies for fall complaints. Participants will make their own liniment to take home.

The cost is $10 for members and $20 for nonmembers. Reservations are required.

• Not Just for Jack-o'-lanterns: "Succulent-Topped Pumpkins" -- noon to 2 p.m. Sept. 24, Magnolia Room.

Horticulturist and garden Manager Minnie Shelor shows how the most humble of pumpkins can become a fabulous fall arrangement or centerpiece, the release said.

In a few easy steps, Shelor uses seasonal dried materials from the garden, along with moss, succulents, which are provided, to transform pumpkins into a succulent display that can be grown on as a dish garden. Guests should bring their own 10- to 14-inch pumpkin and any dried garden materials they may wish to use.

Cost is $20 for members and $30 for nonmembers. Reservations are required.

Workshops, seminars

• Watercolors with Cynthia Schanink -- 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 10, Magnolia Room.

Cynthia Schanink, an experienced watercolorist on the Arkansas Arts on Tour roster, has painted flowers in watercolor for more than 30 years. Schanink will share her knowledge of four different techniques to create flower paintings, with all materials provided.

Students will learn from her original designs of tulips, angel trumpets, roses and orchids. Arches 140-pound watercolor paper and American Journey paints will be used for the 10-by-11-inch finished works of art. The watercolor subject is floral, with illusions of a second detention from color sanding.

The cost is $50 for members and $65 for nonmembers. Reservations are required by calling 800-366-4664.

• Local Cuisine! A Culinary Pairing Event -- 6-8 p.m. Sept. 17, Magnolia Room.

A culinary exploration into the fall season that will feature the pairing of craft beers, cheeses, and meats from the following local providers: JV Farms, Bismarck; Kent Walker Artisan Cheese, Little Rock; and Superior Bathhouse Brewery, Hot Springs.

While exposing the taste buds to carefully chosen flavor profiles, participants will learn about the collaborative efforts of farmers, brewers and food producers that supply a community with locally sourced goods.

The cost is $40 for members and $70 for nonmembers. Reservations are required.

Health, fitness

• Health Walks -- 9-10 a.m. Mondays, Sept. 12 through Nov. 14. Participants will meet in the Welcome Center.

Sharon Turrentine will challenge participants on 3-mile hikes along various garden landscapes. Each week will be a different route. Comfortable clothes appropriate for weather and good walking shoes are recommended.

The cost is free to members and $15 for nonmembers. No reservations are required.

• Plant ID Hikes with Rush Fentress: Members Only -- 8-9:30 a.m., Thursdays through mid-November. Participants will meet in the Welcome Center.

It will be a casual hike through the Evans Children's Adventure Garden and on to the Hixson Nature Preserve, home to dozens of Arkansas's native plant species. Facilitated by Garvan Director of Education Rush Fentress, participants will be encouraged to share their knowledge of native botanical species while learning from others in this educational community. Hikes will be led at a comfortable, conversational pace.
