Chemical reaction puts Jessieville man in hospital

A 24-year-old Jessieville man was taken to CHI St. Vincent Hot Springs Tuesday night after creating a chemical concoction that left him with complicated breathing.

The victim told the Garland County Sheriff's Department that he was bored and started mixing different chemicals together "for something to do" between 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. He mixed bleach, nitric acid, baking soda, salt and tin foil. The mixture turned yellow and produced an odor, leaving him coughing and unable to breathe. He threw the chemicals outside, poured water on it and called 911.

A witness stated they saw batteries and pill bottles near the victim's ingredients.

The 18th Judicial East Drug Task Force and the Hot Springs Fire Department's hazardous materials team responded to the man's residence at 248 Nathan Terrace and found no hazardous materials or manufacture of illegal drugs.

LifeNet transported the victim to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
