A Hot Springs man was arrested Thursday evening after allegedly forcing his way into his girlfriend's home and assaulting her father after she broke up with him.

Deshawn Antonio Halterman, 20, who lists an Alpine Street address, was taken into custody shortly after 6:30 p.m. and charged with aggravated residential burglary, a felony punishable by up to life in prison, and misdemeanor counts of third-degree battery and criminal mischief, each punishable by up to one year in jail.

He remained in custody Friday in lieu of zero bond and is set to appear Aug. 2 in Garland County District Court.

According to an affidavit, the victim stated she and Halterman, her boyfriend, were outside on the porch of her Gaines Avenue residence when Halterman became upset when she told him she no longer wanted to date him.

She said Halterman demanded her cell phone that was inside the residence and she refused to give it to him and stood in front of the doorway. Halterman pushed her out of the way and entered the living room. She said she started yelling for her father, who was in the bedroom. The father then entered the living room and saw the suspect arguing with his daughter.

The parents told police they had no knowledge their daughter had been dating Halterman and had never seen him prior to the incident. The father told Halterman, "I don't know who you are, but you need to get out of my house."

When Halterman refused to leave, the father attempted to push him out. Halterman allegedly grabbed a glass vase and struck the father on the left side of his head, causing his head to bleed. He then picked up a stick and hit him in the chest.

The father punched him in the left side of his face. Halterman then exited the house and picked up a metal object which he reportedly threw through the back glass of the father's vehicle. The mother reportedly witnessed the incident.
