MURFREESBORO -- On a surprise trip planned by her family to the Crater of Diamonds State Park, Grace Houston, 9, of Missouri, found a 1.53-carat white diamond on Friday, according to a news release from the park.
Her family planned the trip for Houston, who said she wants to be a geologist when she grows up, as a way to encourage her passion for geology.
Friday was Houston's second day searching for diamonds at the park. The 100-degree heat nearly kept her family from returning, but Houston was determined to find a diamond, the release said. She told them she would go back to the park, even if she had to go alone.
When she first found a large diamond, she dropped it, so she had to begin a second search. Houston found her diamond while wet sifting alongside her grandmother, Nancy Meli. She said she would keep the diamond and would not put it into a piece of jewelry.
Recent diamond finds include the following (100 points equals 1 carat):
• Al Fling, Murfreesboro, 3-point white.
• Andrew Davis, DeSoto, Kan., 13-point yellow.
• Camille Danna, Haynesville, La., 12-point white.
• Susanne Parker, Little Rock, 24-point white.
• John Pathman, Cicero, Ind., 25-point yellow.
