Rebuttal to scrubs letter

Dear editor:

With regard to Michael Preble's recent letter, "No scrubs," I feel compelled to offer a rebuttal. With all of the problems facing America today: international and domestic terrorism, economic woes, racial tension, etc., it's interesting to see that Mr. Preble has placed wearing scrubs outside of work as one of the top menaces to current society.

As far as anyone "leaning over my salad bar and bellying up to the deli offerings," I would think that to be pretty disgusting behavior regardless of one's attire or profession. As human beings, we all have the propensity to carry disease.

The vast majority of health care workers (myself included) observe universal precautions and follow proper hand washing techniques. As such, I do not feel that health care workers, nor the scrubs most of us wear, pose a significant threat to Mr. Preble's (or anyone else's) well-being.

Often, those of us in health care work long hours and do not have the opportunity to change clothes before grabbing a meal or stopping by Wal-Mart for a few groceries.

As for the salad bar, I would be more concerned about product temperatures and proper food handling, as I'm fairly certain that scrub-wearing patrons are the least worrisome part of that scenario.
