Cabrera's blast in 9th gives Tigers sweep of Red Sox

BOSTON -- Miguel Cabrera hit a tiebreaking home run in the ninth inning that bounced off the top of the wall and into Boston's bullpen, lifting the Detroit Tigers to a 4-3 victory over the Red Sox on Wednesday for a three-game series sweep.

Boston's the last major-league team to be swept in a series of any length this season.

James McCann also hit a solo homer, and Victor Martinez had four singles, a walk and drove in two runs for Detroit, which has won five of seven.

Xander Bogaerts and Dustin Pedroia had solo homers for the Red Sox, who lost for the fifth time in six games to complete a nine-game homestand at 4-5.

Tigers rookie starter Michael Fulmer had another solid start, giving up three runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and no walks in 7 2/3 innings.

Cabrera hit his 21st homer off closer Brad Ziegler (0-1).

Bruce Rondon (4-2) got one out for the win. Justin Wilson got the final three for his first major-league save because closer Francisco Rodriguez wasn't used after working the past two days.

Nationals 4, Indians 1

CLEVELAND -- Stephen Strasburg shut down Cleveland for seven innings and bounced back from his only loss this season, leading the Washington Nationals to a 4-1 win over the Indians on Wednesday.

Strasburg (14-1) began the season with 13 straight wins before he was beaten by the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 21. The powerful right-hander shook off that blemish, holding the Indians to three hits as the Nationals recovered after blowing a two-run lead in the ninth and losing on Tuesday night.

Washington rookie Trea Turner drove in three runs and Daniel Murphy hit his 20th homer off Carlos Carrasco (7-4), who nearly matched Strasburg but was done in by one bad inning.

Nationals reliever Blake Treinen stopped Cleveland's threat in the ninth, getting a game-ending double play for his major-league save.

Strasburg had little trouble handling the AL Central-leading Indians, who came in with the majors' best record since June 1 but couldn't generate enough offense against the Nationals' $175-million ace. He was in control from the outset and made Washington's 2-0 lead over the first five innings feel like the score was 10-0.

Strasburg walked one and struck out seven.

Reds 2, Giants 1

SAN FRANCISCO -- Jay Bruce homered in his career-high fifth straight game, connecting off Madison Bumgarner and leading the Cincinnati Reds over the slumping San Francisco Giants.

Bruce connected for his 25th homer of the season. His sixth home run during his five-game streak broke a 1-all tie in the seventh inning.

The NL West-leading Giants have lost nine of 11 since the All-Star break. The last-place Reds are 8-4 over that stretch.

Dan Straily (6-6) gave up three hits in 7 2/3 innings. Tony Cingrani pitched a scoreless ninth for his 12th save.

Bumgarner (10-6) allowed one earned run and five hits in eight innings, striking out nine.

Rays 3, Dodgers 1

LOS ANGELES -- Matt Moore pitched four-hit ball into the seventh inning, Evan Longoria hit a two-run homer and the Tampa Bay Rays won at Dodger Stadium for the first time.

Luke Maile had an RBI double in a three-run fourth inning as Tampa Bay wrapped up a nine-game West Coast road swing by snapping a four-game skid.

The Rays were swept in a three-game series at Chavez Ravine in 2013, the only other time they've visited the Dodgers' hallowed home turf.

Moore (7-7) performed admirably against the Dodgers, who are thought to be interested in several Tampa Bay starters. The left-hander struck out five and allowed an unearned run.

Brandon McCarthy (2-1) lasted just four innings for the Dodgers in his first loss since Sept. 23, 2014.

Alex Colome pitched a perfect ninth for his 22nd save in 23 chances, rebounding nicely from his first blown save of the season Saturday at Oakland.

Padres 8, Blue Jays 4

TORONTO -- Adam Rosales hit a two-run home run, Alex Dickerson and Brett Wallace each hit solo shots and the San Diego Padres beat the Toronto Blue Jays, avoiding a three-game sweep.

San Diego extended its club-record streak of games with at least one home run to 25. It's the longest run since the 2002 Texas Rangers set a major-league record by homering in 27 straight.

Luis Perdomo (5-4) allowed four runs and six hits in 5 2-3 innings to win back-to-back starts.

Wallace reached base three times. He was hit by a pitch and scored on Rosales' homer in the third, connected off R.A. Dickey in the fifth and hit an RBI single off Joe Biagini in the sixth.

Dickerson homered for the fourth time in four games when he connected off Franklin Morales in the eighth. He is first Padres rookie to homer in four straight games.

Dickey (7-12) allowed seven runs, six earned, and four hits in 5 2-3 innings, starting on three days rest after the Blue Jays adjusted their rotation for a weekend series against Baltimore.

Marlins 11, Phillies 1

MIAMI -- Giancarlo Stanton hit a two-run homer in the first inning to lead a 16-hit attack Wednesday, and the Miami Marlins took the rubber game of their series against Philadelphia, winning 11-1.

Stanton hit his 22nd homer in support of Adam Conley (7-5), who pitched around eight hits and three walks to throw 6 2/3 scoreless innings.

Don Kelly, who began the game 1 for 22 this season, went 3 for 5 with two triples, two RBI and two runs scored. That raised his average from .045 to .148.

Philadelphia rookie Zach Eflin (3-4), who threw a three-hit shutout against the Pirates in his last start, couldn't keep the Marlins scoreless for long. They took a 3-0 lead in the first, and Eflin allowed seven runs in five-plus innings.

Conley escaped one-out, bases-loaded jams in the third and sixth inning, retiring Tommy Joseph and Taylor Featherston to end the threats.

Conley also hit his first career sacrifice fly and a run-scoring single for his first two RBI of the year.

The left-hander improved to 3-0 in five starts this month with an ERA of 1.82. In five career starts against the Phillies, he's 2-1 with an ERA of 1.42.
