Single parent scholarship deadline approaches

The deadline for Garland County applications for Single Parent Scholarship Fund awards is Thursday.

Single Parent Scholarship Fund scholarships are administered by affiliate organizations and volunteers throughout Arkansas. Eligibility criteria and application requirements vary by affiliate.

Garland County students received 30 scholarships for $500 each in the fall 2015 semester. The amount increased to $750 for the 18 scholarships awarded this spring.

About 25 percent of Garland County students graduated from their programs in 2015 and another 63 percent were still enrolled.

Funds for the scholarships come from donations, an annual style show luncheon and silent auction, and a pass-through grant from the Arkansas Department of Higher Education.

Many low and moderate income single parents meet income requirements. Eligible candidates must be a head of household single parent who provides custodial care for at least one child younger than 18. They must have earned a high school diploma or GED, attend school at least half-time and maintain a grade-point average of 2.0.

With the exception of those who are pursuing a master of art's degree in teaching, a four-year degree will not yet have been earned. Applicants must also be a resident of the county in which they are applying for the scholarship and receiving or eligible to receive a Pell Grant.
