Day of Prayer nears

Dear editor:

The 65th National Day of Prayer will be held on Thursday, May 5, at First Church of the Nazarene, 3804 Central Ave., with two opportunities: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 6:30-8:30 p.m.

We will come together to unite our hearts and voices as one, calling upon God to change the spiritual climate and atmosphere in our nation in order to restore His will in a nation that was established by Him.

If you have wondered why this is just the 65th annual event, it is because all presidents since George Washington designated a day of prayer and some for fasting on a day chosen at their discretion. In 1952, Harry S. Truman signed into law declaring a national holiday for national prayer and each president would choose a day when the people were called to pray for our nation and its leaders. In 1988, the law was amended by President Ronald Reagan, permanently setting the National Day of Prayer as the first Thursday in May.

How blessed we are to still have the rights and freedoms afforded to us today. Let us come together with great appreciation of our liberties as individuals and as corporate believers under the name of Jesus, to bring blessings to our nation.
