Historic Eureka Missionary Baptist turns 133

The Historic Eureka Missionary Baptist Church family will celebrate its 133 Church Anniversary at 4 p.m. Sunday.

Special guests will be the Rev. Gregory Nettles and members of the Historic Visitors Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church. The theme is, "Building By the Plans of God and Not Our Own."

Eureka Missionary Baptist Church was organized on May 5, 1883, by a few families and their neighbors in the Gaines and Eureka Street area who decided to organize a place of worship under a brush arbor under the leadership of the Rev. B.B. Dilloney.

The members chose Dilloney as the first pastor of this newly organized church. After a short time, the community erected a frame building, the first church, behind the present building. There were 19 members. In a short time, news spread about the church and the membership grew to 32.

As the membership continued to grow, a lot behind the church was purchased from Simon and Mary Schultist for $200.

A fellowship meet and greet will be held from 2-4 p.m. today, with food, music and fun. All are welcome.
