HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE -- Seth Garner, an early-season tournament winner at Hot Springs Country Club, took a second Arkansas State Golf Association 2016 championship Sunday.
The former Lakeside High player won the ASGA Club Champions event by two strokes with a 36-hole 138 at DeSoto Golf Course. With rounds of 71 and 67, Garner finished two strokes ahead of Matt Willmott, who with two rounds of 70 was the only other player to break par both days and for the tournament.
Daniel Treat (71-79) and Josh McNulty (76-74) tied for third at 150 with Greg Tillery (77-75) fifth at 152, Austin Moix (77-77) sixth at 154 and Colin Osment (80-81) seventh at 161.
With a 7-under 137, Garner won the Relyance Bank Classic in May by three strokes over former Lakeside and Arkansas State teammate Cameron McRae. Two other ex-Ram golfers, Wesley Harris (142) and Drew Greenwood (144), finished in the top six in the spring tournament.
Hot Springs Country Club is host Saturday and Sunday to the annual Randy Beaver Cup matches pitting top amateur players from the ASGA circuit against Arkansas club professionals.
OBU's Bullard receives GAC volleyball honor
Ouachita Baptist junior Kori Bullard is Offensive Player of the Week in Great American Conference volleyball, the league announced Monday.
A former Lake Hamilton multi-sport athlete who also plays basketball at OBU, Bullard hit .387 for the week as the Tigers swept Northwestern Oklahoma and Southwestern Oklahoma. She averaged 3.86 kills and added 1.43 blocks per set, helping OBU record its first five-game GAC win streak since 2011, the league's inaugural season.
Bullard leads the Tigers with 212 kills and 71 blocks this season, ranking fourth in the GAC in blocks.
Harding's Zoe Hardin was named the GAC's top defensive player and Arkansas-Monticello's Kendall Vondra the leading setter for Week 8 of the volleyball season.
Ouachita and Harding are tied for the GAC lead with 8-3 conference records going into their 6 p.m. match Thursday in Searcy. Oklahoma Baptist also is 8-3 but, in its second year of league membership, ineligible for the conference title. Arkansas Tech, Henderson State and Southern Nazarene follow at 7-4. Arkansas Tech faces Henderson at 6 p.m. Thursday in Arkadelphia.
The GAC tournament is Nov. 17-19 at Bank of the Ozarks Arena in Hot Springs.
Henderson women lead HSCC tourney
Host Henderson State leads by nine strokes after the first round of a college women's invitational golf tournament at Hot Springs Country Club.
The Reddies' top four players totaled 306 Monday on the Park Course, Southwestern Oklahoma following in second and Arkansas-Monticello (317) third. Farther back are Harding (344), Southern Arkansas (350) and Seminole State (377).
Henderson's Taylor Loeb led the tournament with a 2-over 74 on the 5,926-yard course. The Little Rock (Mount St. Mary Academy) freshman was one under on the front nine with three birdies. Fayetteville junior Sarah Wright tied for third with a 76 including 10 pars.
Bentonville sophomore Hannah Brauberger followed at 77 and classmate Luisa Gartman at 79 for the Reddies. Sophomore Christian Barrett (Camden Harmony Grove) tied for 20th at 86.
Three Henderson players played as individuals, senior Erin Brown tying for 13th at 82, Taylor Reed placing 15th at 83 and Allison Davis tying for 20th at 86.
The final round today begins at 8:30 a.m.
Youth basketball leagues forming at local church
A youth basketball league for ages 12-17 and including 18-year-olds still in high school is forming at Union Baptist Church, 219 Gulpha St.
