Greenway lighting needed

Dear editor:

I saw that the Greenway walking trail recently received a huge grant to complete the final portion. That's great, as someone who uses the walking trail, I look forward to it.

The grant seemed extremely large, however, so as someone who does utilize the Greenway, I'd like to see some of the moneys used to light the walking trail. We are approaching the time of the year when it turns darker much earlier, so those of us who work and use the trail can appreciate that there is little to no lighting. The time change is approaching, which will only make this worse.

A couple of years ago, I talked to someone at the city and suggested they look into a one-time purchase -- solar lighting for the Greenway. I even said, without making it look tacky, they could annually have small businesses sponsor the light, with a placard placed on the pole, ultimately absorbing some of the cost of upkeep or bulb replacement. I was told great idea. Guess it never came to fruition.

That said, I hope someone with the city or parks department reads this letter and might at least look into the feasibility of placing some lighting along one of the city's treasures so those who can use it can do so more often and in safety.
