Mountain Pine forfeits for third time this season

MOUNTAIN PINE -- With the roster at 11 players, Mountain Pine has forfeited Friday's varsity football game at Mineral Springs, the third forfeit of the season for the Red Devils due to low numbers.

Mountain Pine was able to play each of its last two contests, including last week's homecoming game against Dierks. After three players suffered concussions in the 40-8 loss, coach Sam Counce made the call to cancel Friday's game.

"It was a decision that had to be made," Counce said. "It's been a tough year for these guys and I hate to forfeit another one, but we just can't afford to take a chance with our numbers this low."

Counce said the players have already started concussion protocol and should be able to return in time for the Red Devils to host Murfreesboro on Oct. 7. Reinforcements in the form of junior high players are expected for the last two weeks of the season.

"We'll definitely try to move some kids up whenever we can," said Counce. "Our guys have been working hard all season and being able to play some more games at the end of the year would be great. We just have to get to that point."
