A local man was arrested Thursday after he allegedly attacked his 78-year-old mother, pulling her hair out and punching her.

James Paul Coble, 51, of 186 Golf Links Road, was taken into custody at his residence at 2 p.m. and charged with second-degree domestic battery, a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

Coble appeared Friday morning via video in Garland County District Court and pleaded not guilty to the charge. A felony review hearing to determine if the case will be transferred to Garland County Circuit Court is set for Feb. 5. A court order barring Coble from future contact with his mother was issued by Judge Ralph Ohm, who also set his bond at $3,500. Coble remained in custody as of Friday afternoon.

According to the probable cause affidavit, on Tuesday, police responded to the emergency room at CHI St. Vincent Hot Springs where a woman, 78, was being treated for injuries she allegedly received during an attack by her son.

The victim told officers she was at the Golf Links residence with her son, identified as Coble, when he became angry with her and grabbed her by the hair, pulling some of it out. She said he then punched her in the side of the head and pushed her down, causing her to strike her head on the floor.

She was able to get away from Coble and called her other son who responded to the residence and drove her to the hospital. Officers noted the victim had visible redness and abrasions to her forehead and the right side of her head. They also noted an area on the side of her head where she appeared to be missing hair.

A warrant was subsequently issued for Coble's arrest.
