Library to host photo exhibit of Pleasant Street district

The Garland County Library, 1427 Malvern Ave., will host a photographic exhibit of John Lee Webb and the Pleasant Street Historic District, with a discussion by Cheryl Batts, at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the library auditorium.

In "Look What We Found: A Historical Lecture on the Pleasant Street Community," Batts will discuss the Pleasant Street Historic District, the people who built it and how the area was accepted on the National Register of Historic Places.

The program is scheduled to include photographs of the Pleasant Street District and oral histories of the area.

"You can get many sides of one story, a newspaper article, an oral history from someone who was there, they make up the basis for the sometimes romantic, dramatic and fearful events that, long after we are gone, become part of the legacy of Hot Springs," Batts said.

"We will not just walk down the streets, but we will hear the stories of some of those people who lived on those streets and why the Pleasant Street Historic District is so important to the history of Hot Springs and its people."

Batts is the CEO and founder of People Helping Others Excel By Example, an organization aimed to research and document the lives of African-Americans in Hot Springs through oral histories. Batts' research was key in the designation of two houses for the National Register of Historic Places in the Jonestown Neighborhood in Hot Springs and in getting the Webb Community Center on the State Register of Historic Places, a news release said.

She furnished the information that secured the designation of Arkansas' largest African-American historic district, the Pleasant Street Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places.
