Education system topic of REGARD meeting

The next REGARD meeting will be held from 5-6 p.m. Tuesday in the Fellowship Hall at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 128 Spring St.

The program will be led by Jeri D. Maghoney and her topic of discussion will be: The value of civics education, historical analysis and the practice of civil discourse in our education system. She believes as a society it is to our benefit to educate our children to become concerned and active citizens.

Math and science are very important and necessary. However, it is through the understanding of civics, the in-depth analysis of information or facts, the ability to formulate assertions, and then communicate those assertions that are fundamental to the development of the well-informed and concerned citizen. If schools cannot fulfill this need, then as a community, what can people do to strengthen their future citizens with the tools they will need to guide this country?

Maghoney is a undergraduate student at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock where she is majoring in history and carrying a double minor in secondary education and social studies.

REGARD is an organization with the mission to build connections and cooperation; promote understanding, appreciation, respect and fellowship; and celebrate the richly diverse populations in Hot Springs and Garland County.

Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of the month and are open to all persons. Guests are welcome. No reservation is required. For more information on REGARD or this meeting, call Fred Leonard, 520-8766.
