LH, Mount Ida get state hoop tourneys

A year later than the school anticipated, Arkansas' Class 6A basketball tournament is coming to Lake Hamilton.

The Arkansas Activities Association, annoucing the sites of spring-sport championships Thursday, revealed that Wolf Arena will be host to early 6A rounds Feb. 27-March 4. Lake Hamilton bid unsuccessfully for the 2016 Class 6A tournament, which went to Russellville, after opening Wolf Arena earlier in the school year.

Lake Hamilton also was awarded the Class 6A track meet, scheduled in the first week of May, and the state cross country championships in November. Wolf Arena played host to the Class 6A volleyball tournament and Lake Hamilton to the cross country event at Oaklawn Park last year.

Other basketball sites include Van Buren in Class 7A, Magnolia in 5A, Nashville in 4A, Bald Knob in 3A, Qutiman in 2A and Mount Ida in 1A. Mount Ida played host to the 2015 Class 2A tournament.

All basketball finals, 14 games over three days, are March 9-11 at Bank of the Ozarks Arena in Hot Springs.

Regional basketball sites Feb. 22-25 include West Fork, Nashville and Cave City in Class 4A Charleston, Rose Bud, Riverside and Prescott in Class 3A and Carlisle, Magnet Cove and Pangburn in Class 2A.

State baseball tournaments May 11-13 were granted to Bentonville (Class 7A), Benton (6A), Sylvan Hills (5A), Lonoke (4A), Harding Academy (3A), East Poinsett County (2A) and Woodlawn (1A). Magnet Cove is host to the 2A-South baseball and softball regionals May 4-6.

Soccer sites May 11-13 are Fort Smith (7A), Siloam Springs (6A), Valley View (5A) and Southside Batesville (4A).

FL junior girls win

FOUNTAIN LAKE -- Jill Norman scored 12 points and Karli Bryant 10 as Fountain Lake's junior girls defeated Haskell Harmony Grove 34-15 Thursday.

The Lady Cobras led 10-2 after the first quarter and 22-3 at halftime before Harmony Grove made a mild rally with a 10-point third quarter.

Fountain Lake takes a 10-5 record into Thursday's game against Arkadelphia.

OBU slates banquet

ARKADELPHIA -- Ouachita Baptist University's First Pitch baseball banquet is scheduled at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 28 in Walker Conference Center on the school campus. Tickets are $20 each.

Featured speaker is former Texas Rangers outfielder Rusty Greer. a 2007 inductee to the American League club's hall of fame. Greer played for the Rangers from 1994-02 and finished his career batting .305 with 119 home runs and 614 runs batted in.

Players, captains and coaches of the 2017 OBU Tigers baseball team will be among those introduced. Each ticket is eligible for prizes that will be presented throughout the evening, among them gift cards to area businesses and Ouachita Tiger and Major League Baseball apparel and memorabilia.
