B&B race to be held in Amity

The Beer & Bagel Off-Road Race Series is moving from northwest Arkansas to Amity for its 2017 race.

"It's a really fun event," Joe Dann, race coordinator, said Friday. The race began about 23 years ago in Nebraska and now is run in six states across the heartland.

The Arkansas race will be held on March 11 at Timber Lodge Ranch. The "four-ish" mile race is a trail run and will take runners through woodlands and around a lake, Dann said in a news release. Timber Lodge Ranch has about 15 miles of all terrain vehicle trails, part of which will be used for the racecourse, Dann told The Sentinel-Record.

"It's fun for anyone who likes to have a beer," he said, noting the race is also a sanctioned run with the USA Track & Field. It will be timed and have awards for the winners in each category, he said.

The main draw to the race will be the post party, where participants can celebrate with beer and bagels. Dann said after participants cross the finish line there will be a big blowout party with beer, bagels, dancing and celebrations.

"You've got to refurbish your calories after a run like that," he said. "People crave carbs."

Dann said for each race the organization uses local flavor. Bubba Brew's Brewing Company of Bonnerdale will be the official beer. He said they are working with a local baker, but do not have an official bagel sponsor yet.

"The series has spread to multiple states, but every effort is made to keep it local and homegrown," the release said.

In addition to using local vendors, Dann said they are looking for a local charity to support with either volunteer hours or monetary donations. On a national level, the race supports the H.A.R.T. Foundation, and will donate $1 from every race entry, he said. The H.A.R.T. Foundation helps purchase athletic shoes for high school athletes that may not have the means to buy them, he said.

In addition to free beer, bagels and chili, registration packages include entry into a USA Track & Field sanctioned and professionally timed event, unique finisher medals, age group awards, a personalized souvenir race bib, long-sleeved technical T-shirt, tailgating games during pre- and post-run, and a free digital photo booth, the release said.
