1 injured in boat collision

One person was injured late Saturday night when a pontoon boat collided with a bass boat on Lake Hamilton near Sam's Pizza, 401 Burchwood Bay Road.

Garland County Sheriff's Department Marine Patrol Deputy Richard Green said the bass boat was pulling out of a cove at around 10 p.m. Saturday when it was struck by the party barge, which was headed east.

Green stated that it appeared that as bass boat was leaving the cove it accelerated, causing it to have a high pitch and reduced visibility.

The collision was still under investigation Sunday, but the sheriff's department said the incident does not appear to be alcohol-related.

"It appears at this time to be a pure accident, " said Sgt. John Schroeder, training and media relations coordinator for the sheriff's department.

The driver of the bass boat was injured and transported to an area hospital by LifeNet with non life-threatening injuries.

As of Sunday afternoon, he remained in the intensive care unit, but is expected to be released from the unit soon, according to the sheriff's department.

One passenger on the party barge was also injured but declined medical treatment.

The sheriff's department did not release the name of the bass boat's driver, or the name of the driver of the pontoon boat.
