GC Library to host inaugural meeting for book, discussion club

Garland County Library will host the inaugural meeting of a new book and discussion club, The Dead Star Society, at 10 a.m. Aug. 12. The first meeting will focus on the death and life of Elvis Presley.

"While it might sound a little morbid, there's something fascinating about celebrity deaths, especially the spectacular and shocking ones like Princess Diana or Elvis," said Karen Covey, the library's circulation supervisor. "We're hoping that people will come to reminisce about Elvis and have a lively discussion about his life and death."

The library is giving away a limited number of copies of the book "Careless Love: The Unmaking of Elvis Presley" by Peter Guralnick to those who register early for the program.

"It's a great and heartbreaking book," said Covey. "It's the second volume of his biography, after 'Last Train to Memphis.' I'd encourage people to read both volumes, but we're concentrating on the second one, which picks up after Elvis leaves the army."

The discussion will be followed by a screening of the 1970 documentary, "Elvis: That's the Way It Is."

To register for The Dead Star Society, visit the library's calendar at ww.gclibrary.com or call the library at 623-4161.
