Squirrel knocks out electrical equipment

An errant squirrel caused a power outage that left around 250 Arkansas Entergy Inc. customers without power around noon Monday in the Majestic Lodge Road area in western Garland County.

The squirrel made contact with a piece a of electrical equipment on a pole near the intersection of Springwood and Majestic Lodge Road at around 11:45 a.m. Monday, said Jim Garland, Entergy's manager of region customer service.

The animal contact caused an outage to about 250 customers for around one hour.

"In order to safely make the repairs to the piece of electrical equipment, the repair crew had to de-energize the entire circuit serving that area for about seven minutes," Garland said. This caused a short outage to about an additional 300 customers. Power was restored to nearly all customers in the area about 1 p.m.

About 20 customers in the Windamere Drive area off Springwood Road remained without service following the repairs, but Garland said it appeared to be related to the previous outage in the area. He said a crew was on site and the power should be restored in the area within the next hour or so. Prior to 4 p.m., Entergy's online outage map showed that all outages had been resolved.
