State park celebrates diamond hunters with event

MURFREESBORO -- Crater of Diamonds State Park hosted its seventh annual Prospectors' Gemboree June 17 celebrating diamond hunters in southwest Arkansas.

At the same time, the park also hosted the 11th Annual Famous Crater Diamonds Exhibition, sponsored by Diamonds Old West Hotel/Cabins.

Many other businesses donated merchandise or certificates for the park's 23rd Annual Treasure Hunt. Beginning on June 17, park visitors searched for rocks painted red throughout the diamond search area, which could be redeemed for door prizes.

Four bottles painted orange, redeemable for prize packages, were also buried in the search area. Kim Long, of Martinsville, Ind., discovered the first bottle. Three bottles remain hidden containing prizes from Ace of Diamonds, Caddo Antiques, Dino Dig, Em's Café, Futrell Marine, Jeanine's Fine Jewelry, Ka-Do-Ha Indian Village, Los Agaves of Murfreesboro, Murfreesboro Hardware, Queen of Diamonds Inn, and Western Sizzlin' of Nashville. If they are not found soon, clues to their location will be posted regularly at the park.
