ACES agriculturist to address Ouachita Hosta

Ouachita Hosta and Shade Plant Society will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Magnolia Room at Garvan Woodland Garden. Social times starts at 9:30 a.m. The speaker will be Janet Carson.

Carson graduated from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville then joined the Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service. As the first full-time female agricultural agent in Arkansas, her early years put her degree in urban horticulture and landscape design to work. After exploring the Master Gardener program at a Tulsa conference, Carson assembled a team to begin the process for an Arkansas Master Gardener program.

CAM Tribe District 5 to meet Saturday

Cherokee of Arkansas and Missouri Tribe District 5 will meet at 1 p.m. Saturday at 1420 Central Ave. Join in to become more familiar with the plans for the next four years meetings and elections. Additional news can be emailed on request to [email protected] The new member/voter cards have been printed, but are waiting lamination to enable distribution to those who registered for a voter identification card.

Retired environmental geologist talks to Geology Club

Hot Springs Geology Club will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences, and the Arts, 200 Whittington Ave. Club member and retired environmental geologist George Maxey will speak on "Pharmaceuticals in our Drinking Water -- What, If, But." It will be a brief review of four aspects of pharmaceuticals, their consumption and disposal.

Maxey teaches geology and Earth science at National Park College as an adjunct professor teaching. His experience includes at the University of North Texas as senior lecturer and at Brookhaven College in Farmers Branch, Texas. He founded the Rock, Mineral, Fossil and Meteorite Identification Laboratory at UNT, co-founded the first legal drug take back program in north central Texas and is a member of the Dallas Paleontological Society.
