Three Trojans earn all-state soccer honors

Fresh off their second consecutive Class 5A state championship, the Hot Springs Trojans had three players named to the all-state soccer team released Thursday by the Arkansas Activities Association.

Finishing his illustrious career with a state-record 187 goals, senior Erick Guadron received all-state honors for the fourth year in a row.

Hot Springs sophomore Josue Hernandez and Lakeside senior Jack Butler were named all-state for the second-straight year while Hot Springs senior Manny Santillan and Lakeside senior Ryan Viscardis each earned their first all-state selection.

Despite falling to Sylvan Hills in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs, the Lakeside Lady Rams led Garland County with two all-state performers in sophomore Tarin Delong and freshman Abby Mahoney.

Hot Springs senior Kiara Baker and Lake Hamilton junior Nika Rydza also received all-state honors.

Boys all-state soccer selections from the surrounding area were Arkadelphia senior Jared Garner and Malvern senior Grady Purifoy. Arkadelphia's Mary Jane Adams (sophomore) and Olivia Dixon (freshman) were the girls all-state performers from the surrounding area.

Butler, Guadron, Santillan and Hot Springs juniors Jonathan Aguino and Johnny Gonzales-Vazquez were named to the boys all-state tournament team, Guadron named Class 5A MVP.

Delong and Hot Springs senior Tavia Smith received girls all-state tournament honors.

Hogs-Cowboys rematch

set Jan. 27 at Walton

FAYETTEVILLE -- Arkansas plays Oklahoma State in the Big 12/SEC Challenge next basketball season, the Razorbacks welcoming the Cowboys to Walton Arena Jan. 27.

Oklahoma State's victory last year at Gallagher-Iba Arena gave the Cowboys a 37-14 series lead over Arkansas, which in its only Challenge game at Walton Arena downed Texas Tech 75-68 during the 2015-16 season.

Other Challenge games next year are Georgia at Kansas State, Oklahoma at Alabama, Baylor at Florida, Texas Tech at South Carolina, TCU at Vanderbilt, Kentucky at West Virginia, Ole Miss at Texas, Tennessee at Iowa State and Texas A&M at Kansas.

The Razorbacks will host Minnesota, Colorado State and Oklahoma State at Walton Arena while playing three premier opponents at the Phil Knight Invitational in Portland, Ore., during Thanksgiving week. Arkansas also plays a return game against Houston at Toyota Center, a neutral site.

* Former Arkansas defensive lineman Geno Bell will join Chuck Barrett and Quinn Grovey on the IMG Razorback Sports Network for the 2017 football season, the University of Arkansas announced Thursday.

Bell will serve as the radio sideline reporter, taking over the role from former UA quarterback Grovey, who will be in his first year as the network's color analyst.

Bell lettered at Arkansas from 1993-95, finishing his career in 1997 after missing a year becuase of injury. In 1995, he helped the Danny Ford-coached Razorbacks win the SEC Western Division title, totaling 89 tackles including 10 for loss.

ends in D2 semifinals

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- After upsetting top seed Barry in the first round of match play, Arkansas Tech fell 3-2 to No. 2-ranked Lynn on Thursday in the NCAA Division II men's golf semfinals.

The match was decided in the No. 4 group with Tech senior Austin Smith edged by one stroke after a 72 that included birdies on the last two holes.

Tech's Ryan Spurlock won the No. 1 group with a 3-under 67, five strokes better than his opponent and tying his career-low round. The Wonder Boys' other victory came from Putter Srinoon at No. 5, four strokes clear with a 72.

Wonder Boys Luke Cornett (76) and Jonathan Echberg (78) each lost by four strokes.

Arkansas Tech, ranked No. 50 in Division 2, finished in a 2-2-1 tie with third-ranked Barry, the Wonder Boys advancing on a stroke count (6-5). Cornett (73) and Srinoon (69) won for Tech, each by three strokes, while Spurlock tied Barry's Kyle Brey at 71 and Smith (72) lost by one stroke to Nick Weiland. Echberg shot a 75 in the No. 4 group, four strokes off the pace.
