Disappointed in lawmakers

Dear editor:

With the recent tax reform bill mired in Congress, I would like to express my disappointment in Rep. Bruce Westerman and Sen. Tom Cotton. Once again, they seem unable to fulfill campaign promises (deficit reduction, tax reform, immigration reform, etc.).

My family owns numerous successful businesses and when we have an employee who can't get their job done, they are replaced. That's the way it is supposed to work and these two aren't getting it done.

First, while the proposed bill does include numerous tax cuts for wealthy families like ours, it doesn't go far enough, and they are eliminating (if passed) a number of crucial tax exemptions and loopholes that allow larger deductions, which will hurt the more affluent. It's not fair to penalize people who have worked harder, are more intelligent and subsequently more successful.

Second, according to our accountants, the middle class will not receive much of a break at all, and what little they will ends or is decreased in upcoming years. These are our employees and we are not going to do or support anything that hurts people who are willing to work.

The people who need to be taxed are the ones paying nothing -- the ones who don't want to work, but instead live off social programs such as welfare, food stamps, free school lunch, disability, unemployment and the like. These are the individuals reaping the benefits of persons like myself and my family, and contributing nothing to society or our country. Both Cotton and Westerman insinuated during their campaigns they would make drastic cuts or move toward the eliminate of said programs.

Again, they are promising and not delivering, and my family, who contributed to both their campaigns, and our employees, who were strongly encouraged to vote for both, are being betrayed.

In 2018, we'll be looking for a candidate who can deliver what they promise. May be tough to find, but these two won't be an option, short of a miraculous turn around in performance.
