Three pedestrians struck in separate weekend incidents

Three pedestrians were struck by vehicles in separate incidents over the weekend, including two within an hour of each other Friday evening and one involving a teenage pedestrian Sunday night.

The first incident occurred shortly before 5:30 p.m. Friday in the 100 block of Golf Links Road when Brenda L. Waters, 39, of Hot Springs, who was seated in a motorized scooter, was crossing the roadway utilizing a crosswalk, according to a Hot Springs police report.

James C. Fitzpatrick, 57, of Hot Springs, driving a 2007 Ford XPL, was eastbound on Golf Links when he allegedly failed to yield to pedestrian traffic and struck Waters on the left side of her scooter. A witness, 45, who was driving one car length behind Fitzpatrick, and two other witnesses in the area provided statements to police.

When officers arrived, Waters was lying on her back in the street and her scooter was upright in the middle of the eastbound lane. She was transported by LifeNet to an area hospital with unknown injuries. Fitzpatrick, who stopped at the scene, was later cited for failure to yield to a pedestrian.

About 45 minutes later, Andy Lloyd, 64, of Hot Springs, was walking west in the crosswalk in front of Oaklawn Park on Central Avenue just south of Oaklawn Street when he was struck by a northbound 2002 Chevrolet 1500 pickup driven by Leonard Magby, 69, of Hot Springs. Lloyd was reportedly not injured, and Magby was cited for failure to yield.

Shortly before 8:30 p.m. Sunday, Arkansas State Police responded to a report of a pedestrian being struck on Marion Anderson Road near Walkway Drive involving a 17-year-old male who was walking in the roadway with a friend, ASP Cpl. Jorge Oseguera said Monday.

"He and another friend were walking to see friends up the street since Lake Hamilton school was out for the Thanksgiving holiday," Oseguera said, noting only one teen was struck and the other witnessed it.

The victim was transported by LifeNet to CHI St. Vincent Hot Springs where he was in serious but stable condition Monday. Oseguera noted the female driver of the vehicle that struck him was not at fault since the victim was in the middle of the roadway crossing a narrow bridge area and not in a crosswalk.
