Cold-shooting Lady Cobras fall to Mena, 28-24

FOUNTAIN LAKE -- Fountain Lake struggled from the field Tuesday night as Mena rolled to a 28-24 win at Bass Gymnasium.

Trailing 21-15 after three, the Lady Cobras went on a 6-0 run to tie the game with 3:43 left, but Mena went on a 7-2 run in the final three minutes to secure the win.

Tied at the end of the first, the Lady Bearcats outscored Fountain Lake 6-3 to take the lead into the break.

Mena added five points in the third while holding the Lady Cobras to just two.

Fountain Lake hit 9 of 48 for 18 percent from the field, connecting on just 2 of 15 shots from outside the arc.

"We didn't shoot the ball very well inside tonight," said Lady Cobras head coach Chris Mungle. "We were not as aggressive when we got the ball inside that I felt like we needed to be. Effort was great, defense was really good, we've just got to find a way to put more points on the board."

The Lady Cobras struggled from the charity stripe, sinking 4 of 14 from the line.

"We talked about that in practice. We are not a high scoring team, so we have got to do a really good job on the free throw line, and we didn't do a good job on the free throw line tonight."

Hannah Ross paced the Lady Cobras offense with five points, 10 rebounds and four steals. Isabelle Baker added five points with three rebounds, and Molly Breshears had three with four steals.

Paige Evans led Mena with 13 points, four rebounds and three steals.

Despite the loss, Mungle said he was impressed with the team's defensive play.

"We had a really good defensive effort," he said. "Any time you hold somebody to 28 points, you've got a chance to win.

  • Fountain Lake's junior varsity boys made a strong comeback in the second half, but it was not enough as Mena held on for the 23-21 win.

The Cobras scored 13 in the second half of the running-clock game while giving up 12, but the 11-8 lead that Mena held at the break was enough to keep the home team from taking the win.

Ethan Westerman led Fountain Lake with eight points, two rebounds and a steal, Marcus Needles adding six with two rebounds. Riley Hood had three with two assists and a steal.

Pedro Vieira led the Mena offense with seven points and two rebounds, Braxton Bahr added six and Daniel Davis four.
