HSU adopts ACT superscore method

ARKADELPHIA -- Henderson State University will now use the ACT's "superscore" method to award scholarships to incoming students for the 2018 fall semester.

"About 80 percent of our students receive financial aid, and we are cognizant of the fact that our students rely on Henderson State to be affordable," said Henderson President Glen Jones. "Our university has been recognized as a best value for families in southwest Arkansas, and we are adapting to give even greater advantages to our students."

The superscore is the composition of a student's best subscores, regardless of test date on the ACT.

Admission decisions at Henderson State will still depend on the highest composite score from one test date. However, students will have the opportunity to receive scholarships based on the highest subscores from every test instance.

To be eligible for an academic scholarship, prospective students must be admitted to Henderson State University prior to June 1. The Office of Enrollment Services and Admissions will continue to evaluate student eligibility for scholarships using any and all ACT scores received by June 30.

"We know that there are many indications of a student's readiness for college and ability to succeed when there," said Brandie Benton, associate provost for enrollment and admissions. "We are helping relieve some of the financial burden for students who might otherwise have earned fewer scholarship dollars."

Colleges and universities across the country use the superscore method to admit students. Arkansas State University announced the same change earlier this month.

Every scholarship for incoming freshmen at Henderson State depends on a prospective student's high school cumulative grade-point average and an ACT score. Henderson State also accepts SAT scores, which are converted to ACT equivalent scores using the official concordance tables.

This change went into effect Nov. 15 and will be applied retroactively for students who have already been admitted for the fall 2018 term. Students who are already admitted for fall 2018 will automatically be re-evaluated to ensure they are offered the appropriate scholarship based on their ACT superscore. Those who are eligible for an increase in their award amount will be mailed a new award letter within the next few days.
