Lady Cobras win in first round of St. Joseph's Classic

CONWAY -- Molly Breshears put up 17 points as the Fountain Lake Lady Cobras downed Guy Perkins, 51-42, in the first round of the Conway St. Joseph's Classic tournament.

With the score tied at 9 after eight minutes, the Lady Cobras outscored the Lady Thunderbirds 16-12 to take a 25-21 lead into the break.

Fountain Lake stretched its lead by three in the third quarter, taking a 35-29 lead into the final period, and the Lady Cobras outscored Guy-Perkins 16-14 in the final to pick up their first win of the season.

Emoree Martin and Isabelle Baker each added nine for the Lady Cobras

Fountain Lake (1-2) hosts Malvern tonight, and the team will face the winner of the Clinton-England game.

Broyles Award finalists

LITTLE ROCK -- Five finalists for the 2017 Broyles Award have been announced by the Frank & Barbara Broyles Foundation. The award, which honors the top assistant coaches in college football, will be announced Tuesday, Dec. 5, at the Mariott Hotel in Little Rock.

The five finalists are Kevin Steele, Auburn defensive coordinator; Tony Elliot, Clemson co--offensive coordinator/running backs; Bill Bedenbaugh, Oklahoma offensive coordinator/offensive line; Troy Walters, UCF offensive coordinator; and Jim Leonhard, Wisconsin defensive coordinator.

Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables received last year's Broyles Award, and winners from the past five seasons are not eligible for this year's award.

Proceeds from the 2017 Broyles Award support the mission of the Broyles Foundation; to provide education, support, and resources to Alzheimer's caregivers.

Riceland Foods will serve as the presenting sponsor of the 2017 Broyles Award. Riceland is the world's largest miller and marketer of rice with its products sold across the nation and to more than 75 foreign destinations.
