LOS ANGELES (AP) -- James Franco is by all measures a successful actor but he still remembers what it felt like to be an outsider trying to break in. It's part of what drew him to direct and star in "The Disaster Artist," about the making of the famously terrible film "The Room" that has become a cult classic.

Sporting Gene Simmons hair, prosthetics and a vaguely Eastern European accent, Franco plays the man behind the phenomenon, Tommy Wiseau, in "The Disaster Artist" which hits theaters in limited release on Friday. He stars alongside his brother Dave Franco, who plays Greg Sestero, an actor in "The Room" who co-wrote the book the movie is based on.

Both say they related to the story of someone trying to break into Hollywood.
