Yogis raise money for hurricane relief

A local yoga studio plans to host a special donation-based class from 6-7 p.m. Tuesday to help fund relief efforts in the Key West area following Hurricane Irma.

The Yoga Place, 301 Whittington, has teamed up with musician Eric Paul Levy to offer a yoga session featuring healing sounds that help restore harmony and balance to life. Levy uses a series of tuning forks, singing bowls, nature sounds and his own voice to create a calming atmosphere.

"I just wanted to give back," he said.

Levy has been playing guitar since the age of 11 and began sound healing a little over a year ago. According to him, the body can become disaligned due to external stimuli, but through sound healing, that alignment can be restored. His music caters to refreshing energy pathways within the body.

So far, he has raised about $170 traveling to a few other yoga studios playing his music. His goal is to raise $1,000 to assist with relief efforts in his hometown of Key West, Fla. The money will either go into helping a local business that lost everything in the hurricane regain its footing, or to the most pressing need in the community he encounters once he returns home.

"Yoga is all about giving back. There are several types of yoga, including Karma yoga, or the yoga of action," said yoga instructor Karen Watson Reeves.

The class will be open to all levels of practice, and the instructor will break down each move, giving variations to adjust the intensity of each pose. It is gentle flow yoga guided by Reeves, and the live music will move with the flow of the class.

Levy has a history of collecting donations during difficult times. His concert tour, Half 4 Human, donated half the profits to those affected by Hurricane Katrina and the detrimental earthquake that hit Haiti in 2010.

"I'm really about giving back. I feel really grateful and blessed to be doing what I'm doing, so I want to help others," said Levy.
