Lady Rams spoil rival's senior night

Emotion only went so far for Hot Springs' volleyball team against Lakeside on Senior Night at Trojan Fieldhouse.

Hannah Whorton had 34 assists and 19 service points, five off aces, as Lakeside rolled to a 3-0 victory Tuesday night.

"That's a personal high for her," Lakeside head coach Allison Frizzell-Kizer said. "That was awesome. Overall, it wasn't pretty, but we did get a personal high."

The Lady Rams stretched a 6-0 lead to 21-9 before winning the first set 25-13.

"We ended up picking offensively towards the middle and the end, so that helped us finish," Frizzell-Kizer said.

The Lady Trojans slowed Lakeside's scoring early in the second set, allowing an average single point per serve before Lakeside jumped ahead 14-6 and won 25-13.

Hot Springs briefly led the third set before Lakeside came on strongly, 25-11.

"Lakeside's a great team," said Hot Springs head coach Deana Franklin. "Overall, I don't think we played bad. We blocked the ball decent. We dug the ball decent. We didn't make many mistakes, but they capitalized on those that we did. I think we played real well getting ready to go into the conference tournament. I feel like if we can play that way, we can come out a winner and be going to the state tournament, too."

Molly Stineman led the Lady Rams with 12 digs, Abby Mahoney added 12 kills, Gaylynn Green 10 kills and Kayleigh Corjay two solo blocks.

Senior Briana Aldaz led the Lady Trojans with 17 digs and two kills while classmate Jenna Fazio had three digs, three assists and a kill.

"They stepped up," Franklin said. "I've had good leadership, good kids. I'm really, really blessed with good kids -- sophomore to senior. I've been very blessed with that."

Jaidan Thomas and Breunna Collins each had three blocks, Collins adding two kills, and Xazia McCoy and Jamie Broadway had three kills apiece.

Regarding Broadway, "She's been kind of hot and cold," Franklin said. "When she's on, she's on. She probably had her best game since early in the season tonight."

Hot Springs is 4-13 overall, 0-8 in 5A South, going into next week's district tournament. Lakeside (29-4-1, 7-0) wraps up the regular season tonight against visiting Texarkana.

* Lakeside's junior girls finished the regular season 18-0 in conference games and 30-2 overall after a 2-0 triumph (25-10, 25-22) at Hot Springs. Leading the Lady Rams were Maddie Trusty, Haley Fauber, Natalie Jennings, Adachi Igbokidi, Wesley Divers and Alexis Drake. Also contributing, said coach April Lawson, were Ava Monte, Katie Ballard, Jaiden Drake, Macy Landry and Emi Kejser.

Lakeside is host to the district tournament and, as top seed, plays No. 4 seed Camden Fairview on Monday. No. 2 seed Hot Springs plays No. 3 seed Magnolia with the championship match to follow. Action starts at 4 p.m.
