Scott Edward Powell, 36, of 509 Lakeland Drive, was taken into custody at his residence shortly before noon and charged with second-degree domestic battery, a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

Powell, who also had a warrant for failure to appear, remained in custody Monday on zero bond and is set to appear Sept. 18 in district court.

According to the affidavit, shortly before 11 a.m., sheriff's Sgt. David Martineau and Deputy Richard Huffman responded to a disturbance in progress at the Lakeland residence. Upon arrival, they made contact with a female witness, 29, who stated she saw Powell slap his daughter in the face for helping Powell's girlfriend, 23, get out of the house after Powell had been hitting her all day.

The girlfriend told deputies Powell had been "hitting on her" all morning and she was finally able to get away by crawling out a window with the help of Powell's daughter. She said Powell fled out the back door when deputies arrived.

Huffman spoke to the daughter who said she was trying to get out of the house and get away from her father when he slapped her on the head, grabbed her, threw her on the sofa and struck her on the leg three times. Huffman noted the girl had bruising on her head above her right eye and on her leg.

Powell was located hiding behind some plywood in the attic and taken into custody. He allegedly admitted he slapped his daughter in the back of the head and grabbed her because she was trying to go outside and "there was too much stuff going on" and he didn't want her out there.

The Arkansas Department of Human Services was notified and the girl was released to the custody of her mother, who told deputies the bruise on the girl's head was "already there" and was caused when her little brother hit her.
