Village Writers sponsor high school contest

HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE -- The Hot Springs Village Writers' Club is sponsoring a "Top-Ten Young Writers' Contest" for Garland County high school students.

"Students with musical, theatrical, athletic and scientific talent all have venues for having their work recognized," said club member Millie Gore Lancaster. "Students who are talented fiction writers don't have such a venue. Our club wants to offer them one."

Lancaster said the club provided information about the contest to all high school English teachers in the county. Details of the contest are available online at http://www.villagewritersclub.com.

The genre of the contest is flash fiction, which the contest defines as "a story in 300-500 words." Entries should include the title, "Second Look," followed by a contestant's subtitle.

The authors of the 10 best entries will each be awarded $20 and recognition as a Top 10 Young Writer. The deadline for the competition is Oct. 2. and winners will be notified on Oct. 20, the National Day on Writing as designated by the National Council of Teachers of English.
