GAC-leading UAM punishes sliding OBU

ARKADELPHIA -- Ouachita Baptist's losing streak reached 11 games Sunday with a pair of losses to finish off a three-game sweep of No. 19 Arkansas-Monticello, which leads the Great American Conference baseball standings.

The Boll Weevils (26-9, 20-4) scored eight runs off of six hits in the first inning of an 18-5 loss in the first game at Rab Rodgers Field on Saturday. Monticello took the first game, 15-10, in 11 innings Saturday before finishing off the series with a 4-2 in the second game of the Sunday doubleheader.

It was the second time this season Ouachita (10-28, 6-18) allowed eight runs in an inning. Monticello scored at least two runs each inning until the Boll Weevils had an 18-0 lead in the sixth.

Kyle Alexander kept hit hitting streak alive with a single through the left side. Preston Speers followed with a single of his own and Ben Swanger drew a walk with the bases loaded several batters later to give the Tigers their first run of the game and Swanger's first career RBI.

The Tigers scored four runs off of a single hit in the seventh inning, but were run-ruled by the inning's end.

Monticello started the scoring in the second game of the doubleheader in the second inning. Jordan Johnson and Austin Brakebill each had RBI hits in the inning to give the Boll Weevils a 2-0 edge over the Tigers.

The Boll Weevils tacked on a run in the top of the third inning with a sacrifice fly by Brian Ray.

Ouachita cut into the Boll Weevils lead in the bottom of the third, when Louis Steen scored on a wild pitch from third base.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Aaron Studdard hit a sacrifice bunt back to the pitcher and scored Victor Draijer from third. The Tigers were down, 3-2, heading into the fifth inning.

Garrett Dodd hit an RBI single up the middle to give the Boll Weevils an insurance run in the top of the sixth. Ouachita came up short in the bottom of the seventh inning as Monticello completed the sweep.

Saturday's four-hour, 11-inning game was the longest of the season for Ouachita. The Tigers are 2-2 this season in extra-inning contests.

Ouachita starting pitcher J. F. Matros, Arkadelphia, made his 47th career start for the Tigers. Matros is now one start away from tying the GAC record for career starts.

The senior exited the game after throwing 145 pitches in seven innings of work. He struck out eight batters in the contest.

Ouachita is scheduled to host Southern Arkansas (24-11, 17-7) in a non-conference contest today at 3 p.m. at Rab Rodgers Field. The Muleriders are tied for second place in the conference with Henderson State (23-13, 17-7).
