A previously convicted felon arrested last year after he was found in possession of three firearms during a routine traffic stop was sentenced to two years in prison Monday after pleading guilty in Garland County Circuit Court.

Johnny Boone Goodman, 32, who lists an Amity Road address, was set to stand trial June 19 but opted to plead guilty to a felony count of possession of a firearm by certain persons, punishable by up to six years in prison. Costs were expunged for time served after his arrest.

According to the probable cause affidavit, on Nov. 16, 2017, shortly after noon, Hot Springs police Officer Jonathan Smith stopped a GMC Sierra in the 100 block of North Patterson Street after noting it had a cracked front windshield.

He spoke to the driver, identified as Goodman, who told him he didn't have a valid driver's license. In checking Goodman and his three passengers to see if anyone else had a valid license, he determined Goodman was convicted in 2007 of felony counts of commercial burglary and breaking or entering.

Smith asked if Goodman and the others would mind exiting the vehicle so he could have his K-9 partner, Bear, perform a vehicle sniff for narcotics and they all consented.

All the doors to the vehicle were left open and Smith saw a .22-caliber revolver in a holster in the rear passenger side door compartment. Bear alerted on the gun and then alerted on a glass pipe in the floorboard. In searching the rest of the vehicle. Smith found two rifles under the seats. He noted all three firearms were loaded.

Goodman was taken into custody for the firearms due to his prior convictions, which prohibited him from owning or possessing firearms. He was released on Dec. 14, 2017, on $7,500 bond pending trial.

While he was out on bond, Goodman was arrested again Feb. 8, 2018, on felony charges of possession of a controlled substance, meth or cocaine, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He pleaded not guilty to the charges the next day and was released on $5,000 bond on Feb. 12.

A felony review hearing to determine if the charges will be bound over to circuit court is now set for May 7.
