Lakeside to hold community meeting on millage proposal

Lakeside School District will hold a community meeting on its millage proposal at 6 p.m. today in the high school tech center.

Lakeside is seeking voter approval of a 4-mill increase on May 22 to fund proposed building projects, including a new two-story junior high school, to accommodate the district's continued growth and increase the safety of its learning environment.

Superintendent Shawn Cook said the district has hosted a series of millage meetings "to inform our patrons, stakeholders, and community about the millage increase that Lakeside is proposing."

Today, he said, "will be a great opportunity for our community to get information regarding the millage, as well as ask any questions they may have."

Since 2004, the district has grown by more than 1,000 students. If the millage is approved, Lakeside's millage rate would increase to 41.70, making it the third-highest among the county's seven public school districts.

An informational packet created by a special committee is accessible to the public on the school's website which breaks down the additional cost to voters in the district as $80 per year, based on a $100,000 home.

Voters who are unable to attend today's public meeting, or who would like more information, can call Cook at 501-262-1880 or email [email protected].
