Chanel's Legacy decision looms months after injury

Breeder/owner Allen Poindexter said this week multiple Oaklawn Park stakes winner Chanel's Legacy will be re-evaluated late this month after suffering a "cracked pelvis" at the start of the Grade 3 $300,000 Charles Town Oaks on Sept. 23 at Charles Town in West Virginia.

Poindexter said the 4-year-old Dominus filly has been turned out in Kentucky since the Charles Town Oaks, when she "jostled soundly leaving the gate, eased shortly afterward and was vanned off in obvious distress," according to footnotes from the official race chart.

"I don't know that she'll ever come back at that same level," Poindexter said. "It's pretty sad."

Poindexter said if X-rays indicate the injury has healed, Chanel's Legacy "could" resume training.

"If not, then we'll breed her," Poindexter said.

Chanel's Legacy is already booked to Bernardini, Poindexter said, and a decision to breed her this year will "probably" have to be made by May 1.

Bred in Iowa, Chanel's Legacy has a 5-2-1 record from 14 starts and lifetime earnings of $413,144. She raced five times at the 2017 Oaklawn meeting for trainer Lynn Chleborad, winning the $125,000 Dixie Belle Stakes and $125,000 Martha Washington Stakes before running second in the Grade 3 $400,000 Fantasy Stakes for 3-year-old fillies.
