Jimmy J. Short, 86, of Troutville, Va., died on Friday, April 20, 2018.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Esther Forga Short; a brother, Thomas Gerald Short; and two sisters, Sue Davis and Barbara Stanley.
Jimmy is survived by his wife of 64 years, Doris Riley Short; sons, James Short (Bonnie), Ron Short, Mike Short (Rachel) and Steve Short; sisters, Linda Wood, Charlotte Stiles (Eddie) and Teresa Stovall (Jerry); two brothers-in-law, Clark Riley and Harold Riley (Dotty); eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends.
He was a graduate of the University of Arkansas at Monticello and retired from the United States Forest Service. Jimmy was a former Deputy Supervisor of the Jefferson National Forest in Roanoke, and Center Director of Flatwoods Job Corps in Wise County, Va. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and the Army National Guard. Jimmy was an avid hunter and fisherman.

A memorial service will be conducted at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at Oakey's Vinton Chapel with Pastoral Counselor Drew Purcell officiating. Military Honors will be presented by the U.S. Navy. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the funeral home.
