AAUW launches third Academic Angels fundraiser

The Hot Springs/Hot Springs Village branch of American Association of University Women, as part of its never-ending efforts to promote education for women and girls, is preparing to launch this year's "Academic Angels" scholarship fundraising program on Sept. 27 at Diamante.

This year's event is $45 per person and will feature a dinner, and silent and live auctions. Diners have a choice of grilled pork tenderloin or tilapia, and the price includes tickets for two beverages.

In the past, silent auction items have included original artwork, home-baked goods, gift certificates for local businesses and restaurants, rounds of golf, etc. Auctioneer Steve Thacker will return to oversee the bidding on items such as hosted meals, cocktail parties and lake cruises.

The "Coolidge Corner" -- in honor of Velma and John Coolidge -- will feature a selection of books donated by members of AAUW book clubs.

The event is open to the public, but seating is limited -- more than half the available tickets have already been sold.

AAUW was founded in 1881 and has 1,000 local branches and more than 170,000 members nationwide. Its mission is to advance "equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy and research."

The Hot Springs/Hot Springs Village branch was established in 1923, and has awarded scholarships to more than 180 local women since 1995.
