HS JazzFest combines jazz, classical music for concert

The Arkansas Brass quintet and the Anything That Moves jazz combo will come together in a singular evening of classical and jazz music on Aug. 31 in "Classical & Jazz Blow Out," a concert set to be performed during the 27th Hot Springs JazzFest at the Hot Springs Bathhouse Dinner Theatre, 701 Central Ave. An optional dinner will be served.

The audience will hear the music of Arkansas Brass first, followed by ATM with special guest performer Matt Catingub on saxophone, keyboard and vocals, Clyde Pound on keyboard, Les Pack on guitar, Paul Stivitts on drums and David Higginbotham on bass. Entertainer Jackie Beaumont will emcee the evening and sit in on a song or two.

The bands will join together following the individual performances in an explosive combination of classical and jazz music. Adding yet another dimension to the evening's performance is mezzo-soprano Diane Kessling who will join with a special tribute to Leonard Bernstein and an operatic Aria accompanied by pianist Elsen Portugal.

"Classical & Jazz Blow Out" is sponsored by the Morris Foundation. Dinner begins at 6 p.m. and the show begins at 7 p.m. Jazz Society member tickets are $50 for dinner and show or $35 for show only, and nonmember tickets are $55 for dinner and show or $40 for show only.

The 27th Hot Springs JazzFest, set for Aug. 30-Sept. 2, is produced by the Hot Springs Jazz Society and presented in venues throughout Hot Springs National Park with entrance cost ranging from free to $55. Artists from Arkansas and the nation are scheduled to perform, including a concert at the Ohio Club with the Dixieland group Spa City Stompers, the "Classical & Jazz Blow Out" with a surprising combination of jazz by ATM and classical music by Arkansas Brass quintet, the traditional free outdoor concert "Jazz in the Streets," and several other jazz programs.
