First Presbyterian Church Bargain Box celebrated 50 years of service to the community in November. This little thrift shop at 213 Whittington Ave. is the oldest continuous thrift shop in Garland County.

On Nov. 1, 1968, First Presbyterian Women began the Bargain Box. It was originally envisioned to support nursing scholarships at St. Joseph's Hospital, then located across the street from First Presbyterian Church. Over the years, the mission of the Bargain Box grew to include dozens of agencies and families in need across Garland County.

First Presbyterian Church members celebrated this wonderful occasion by donating a "nearly new" item from their homes as birthday gifts to the Bargain Box.

Since 1968, over $481,118.70 has been raised to provide educational scholarships, enhance health care, and meet human needs for Garland County residents.

"The dedicated Bargain Box crew wishes to thank all of our church members and our community for all of the donations and support over these past 50 years," a news release said.
