Lions, Cobras best conference foes

Jessieville outfought regional rival Perryville on Tuesday, while the Fountain Lake Cobras coasted to a league win at home against Two Rivers.

The Lions (8-4, 2-1 3A-4) were matched up Tuesday with the Mustangs (5-2, 2-1), who defeated Jessieville in both the 3A-4 district tournament final and the 3A-1 regional tournament final. The visitors were led by 20 points from senior Tyler Holloway and 14 from junior B.J. Holloway in a 51-50 win on the road.

The teams traded runs in the first half. Jessieville took an 18-10 lead by the start of the first quarter, but Perryville carried a 30-28 lead into halftime. The Lions tied the game at 42-all by the end of the third quarter and held off the Mustangs in the fourth.

"I can't say enough about the guys fighting through some extreme adversity," said Jessieville head boys' basketball coach Jared White. "We had odd lineups on the floor due to foul trouble, and they were a load on the glass.

"We kept playing and made just enough plays. Tyler and B.J. really stepped up tonight and played well on both ends. We will try to carry this momentum over into Friday where we host a solid, athletic Paris team."

The Eagles are 7-5 overall and 2-1 in conference play.

Fountain Lake (10-2, 2-1) had an easier time on Tuesday with Two Rivers (1-9, 0-3). The Cobras routed the Gators, 57-29, despite Two Rivers getting 27 points from two players.

Fountain Lake jumped out to a 44-11 lead by halftime and coasted through the second half.

Junior Colton McMullin tied for the game lead with 17 points for the Cobras. Junior Ramiro Vasquez and senior Joe Murphy tied with 10 points apiece.

Junior Myles Johnson led the Gators with 17 points. Sophomore Jack Coates added 10 points.

Fountain Lake will be at home again on Friday at at Irvin J. Bass Gymnasium-Sammy Lambert Court to host Lamar (2-7, 0-3) in another conference matchup.

Girls

Both Fountain Lake and Jessieville girls' teams suffered defeats on Tuesday.

Fountain Lake (4-8, 0-3) trailed, 11-6, after the opening quarter and Two Rivers (7-3, 2-1) was ahead, 16-10, at halftime. The Lady Cobras cut the margin to five points at 21-16 to start the fourth quarter, but the Lady Gators held on for the win.

Sophomores Presley Hamric and Hannah Vaughn paced Fountain Lake with eight points apiece. Junior Emoree Martin added six points.

Fountain Lake will be at home again on Monday against Lamar (9-2, 3-0)

Perryville (4-3, 1-2) outlasted Jessieville (8-4, 1-2) on Tuesday, 59-56, in overtime.

Jessieville led, 10-6, after the opening quarter, but the game was tied at 21-21 by halftime. Perryville took a 37-32 advantage into the final quarter, but the visitors outscored the hosts, 13-8, in the final quarter to force overtime at 45-45.

Up next for Jessieville is a home date with Paris (9-3, 1-2) on Friday.

* Jessieville won both junior high matchups against Fountain Lake on Monday at the Jessieville Sports Arena a week after the two schools split a pair of senior high games.

Harli Bassett and Kallie Castleberry scored 13 and 12 points, respectively, to lead Jessieville to a 40-35 win in the junior high girls' game. Alyssa Stultz added seven points and Justice Cole added four points.

The junior Lions entered the second quarter with a 9-3 deficit in their game, but they moved ahead of the Cobras (8-3), 18-14, by halftime. The junior Cobras moved to within one point at 24-23 by the end of the third quarter, but the hosts held on the final quarter.
