Hot Springs police recovered an undisclosed amount of money that was scattered about the Crawford Drive area Monday afternoon after two suspects allegedly robbed the owners of a gas station at gunpoint.

A person who matched the description of one of the suspects was located in the area a short time later and detained, police said. No description of either suspect had been released as of presstime Monday.

Police said in a news release that the owners had just exited the Valero gas station, 3228 Central Ave., at around 12:27 p.m. Monday with the store deposits when they were robbed.

The suspects, who were armed with handguns, approached the owners and forcibly took an undisclosed amount of cash from them, the release said.

Hot Springs police Officer Richard Nunez was patrolling in the area of Central Avenue and Crawford Street when he heard one of the victims scream, the release said. Nunez reportedly observed a maroon GMC Acadia fleeing the scene and was able to quickly stop the vehicle between Pro Signs and Graphics, 110 Crawford, and Colton's Steak House, 120 Crawford.

As he pulled in behind the Acadia, Nunez reportedly saw one suspect flee the scene on foot toward Villa Central Apartments, 605 Higdon Ferry Road. A perimeter was set up in the area before the one person was detained.

As the suspect fled, he allegedly dropped the money, scattering it behind Las Americas Supermarket, 114 Crawford, and continued to flee. Officers recovered the undisclosed amount of money and handed it over to the crime scene investigation unit.

The robbery is still under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the Hot Springs Police Department at 501-321-6789.
