Two local restaurateurs apply for an open commission seat

Two local restaurateurs have applied for an open seat on the Hot Springs Advertising and Promotion Commission.

The applicants are Briana Moore, owner of Red Light Roastery, 1003 Park Ave., and Chris Dunkel, proprietor of Stubby's BBQ, 3024 Central Ave.

The commission will vote on the position at its regular meeting on Monday. The commission's appointment must also be ratified by the Hot Springs Board of Directors.

The vacancy was created in January, after the commission's chairman, Bob Martorana, resigned following his retirement as general manager of the Arlington Resort Hotel & Spa.

The new commissioner will complete the remainder of Martorana's term, which expires Sept. 30, 2020.

The position must be held by an owner or manager of a hotel, motel or restaurant business located within the city limits. Applicants must also be a qualified elector in the city of Hot Springs.

According to a recent email from the staff to the commission, both applicants are registered voters within the city limits of Hot Springs, and both applicants are also current on all advertising and promotion taxes, and have a history of remaining current.

The seven-member commission administers the collection and expenditure of the city's 3 percent tax on prepared food and lodging for the purpose of promoting Hot Springs. The commission also oversees operation of the Hot Springs Convention Center.

Moore, in her application, says she has been a Hot Springs resident for over 15 years. She also owns and operates Larkmartin Soaps, and developed and managed the "Handmade Holiday Shop" pop-up store for local artists for six years.

Moore, among her community service activities, says she has been an "engaged resident of Park Avenue and the revitalization of 'Uptown' Park Avenue."

"I am a supporter of Hot Springs and would like to continue the success of promoting Hot Springs as a destination for visitors, conventions, and tourism opportunities," Moore wrote. " I would like to make a positive impact on our community and further the development and renewal of Hot Springs by serving on the commission."

Dunkel, in his application, said "I love Hot Springs/Garland County," under qualifications and experience.

"Have worked among many other leaders throughout our tenure here in the 'Spa City,'" Dunkel said, adding that the business "allows us to reach those who vacation here, gather feedback." Stubby's is located directly across Central Avenue from Oaklawn.

Dunkel said he wants to serve on the commission "to assist in the upward growth of our Spa City, maintain happy faces on our visitors!"
