A-State, LR take momentum into matchup

JONESBORO -- Arkansas State junior guard Akasha Westbrook registered her third double-double this season to lead the Red Wolves' to an 85-80 victory over Sun Belt Conference preseason favorite UT-Arlington Saturday afternoon at First National Bank Arena.

Westbrook scored 18 points for the ninth consecutive games in double figures, the 14th time this season and for the 17th time in her career. She pulled down a career-high 11 rebounds to notch her second double-double in less than two weeks. Westbrook also tied her career high for steals with six and finished the game one assist shy of her career-high five.

Arkansas State (9-8, 4-2) will now begin a three-game road trip on Saturday with a 3 p.m. game at Little Rock (9-8, 6-0) in the Jack Stephens Center. The Trojans took a 63-48 win at home on Saturday over second-place Texas State (11-6, 4-2).

A season-high five Arkansas State women's basketball players scored in double figures, including sophomore guard Starr Taylor with a career-high 20 points, against Arlington (8-9, 2-4). Little Rock beat Arlington 59-57 on Thursday, the same night Arkansas State lost 67-55 to Texas State.

The Red Wolves set new season highs for points, field goals made with 32 and field goal percentage at .516 in the win over Arlington, which built a 17-12 advantage with 2:44 to play in the first quarter, but Arkansas State led 19-17 lead after 10 minutes of play.

A 20-6 spurt saw the Red Wolves take a 32-23 lead midway through the second frame. Bradshaw scored 11 points in the second quarter to help the Red Wolves lead 40-34 at halftime.

Little Rock junior Ronjanae DeGray put up a season-high 23 points off of the bench in the 15-point win over Texas State Saturday. She scored 11 points in the final quarter to help the Trojans pull away.
