HSU, OBU leading scorers earn GAC nominations

ARKADELPHIA -- The leading scorers for the Henderson State women's basketball team and the Ouachita Baptist men's team were nominated for the Great American Conference Players of the Week awards for the 10th week of the season.

Hailey Tucker, a junior guard from Bartlesville, Okla., was named the GAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week as Southwestern Oklahoma State (13-1, 9-0) defeated rival Southeastern Oklahoma State (7-7, 5-4) 84-80 in Durant for the first time since Feb. 16, 2013. She scored 20 points and had a career-high 14 rebounds in a 90-80 victory over East Central (4-8, 3-5) and 29 points against Southeastern to extend her streak of 20-point games to five.

Southeastern's Markell Henderson, a senior guard from Boswell, Okla., was named the GAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week. He poured in 22 points as the Savage Storm (8-6, 7-2) won 89-86 at Oklahoma Baptist (6-9, 3-6) and 83-72 at home over Southwestern (3-12, 1-8).

Pink Jones, Henderson's leading scorer with 15.5 points per game, was nominated for the women's award. The sophomore guard from Fayetteville scored 26 points in 32 minutes as Henderson (10-4, 6-2) beat Arkansas Tech (11-2, 7-2), 75-52, for only the third time in the last decade. She followed the performance with 11 points, four rebounds and three steals in a 69-47 win at Arkansas-Monticello (5-8, 1-7).

Other nominees for the women's award were Adrienne Berry, junior, Southern Nazarene; McKenzie Cooper, Oklahoma Baptist; Sue Key, Southern Arkansas; and Lyrik Williams, junior, Arkansas Tech.

Martin leads Ouachita (5-8, 3-5) with 12.5 points per game. He scored 18 points in an 82-78 home win over Monticello (9-5, 4-4) on Thursday and 17 points on the road against Harding (1-13, 1-8) in a 77-73 loss.

Nominees for the men's award included Alex Brown, junior, Arkansas Tech; Derylton Hill, senior, Monticello; Draylan Perkins, sophomore, Southern Arkansas; Chandler Rickey, senior, Oklahoma Baptist; and Micah Speight, sophomore, Southern Nazarene.

Henderson and Ouachita were set to open this year's basketball series of the Battle of the Ravine Tuesday at Bill Vining Arena, but the games were canceled due to inclement weather and rescheduled for next Tuesday.
